Cookery Workshop: Simply Soup! Saturday January 16, 2010, 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM . $70/ person Soups are endlessly varied, extremely versatile and nutritious - the prefect dish to make ahead and for the budget-conscious cook. Learn to prepare several different types of soups from scratch using vegetable, meat and beans – as well as your own home-made broth. Besides learning the various way to make broth, we’ll make a 4 soups - some fast some not so: a clear spicy Asian-inspired soup; a cream-style (but dairy free) vegetable soup; a creamy vegetable soup; and a hearty meat-based soup. Printed recipes provided, as well as bowls of just-made soups to savor.
Cookery Workshop: Simply Chicken! 2 separate sessions (chose one): Saturday January 23, 2010, 10AM to 2:30PM Monday February 15, 2010, 10AM to 2:30 PM $75/ person Learn to make the most of chicken, this inexpensive, easy-to-find and too-often-maligned poultry. We’ll learn how to cut up a whole chicken and how to make your own stock (and why you should do both). We’ll cook a spicy Vietnamese-inspired chicken soup that’s sure to warm you up. We’ll also concoct spicy Chicken Sosaties (of South African inspiration) and of course, we’ll learn to roast a perfect chicken along with seasonal veggies for a one-pot delicious dinner. And provide ideas for left-overs that neither taste nor feel like left-overs. Perfect for meal planning, especially on a budget. Printed recipes provided, as well as time to sit down and enjoy the freshly prepared dishes.
Cookery Workshop: A Spring Entertaining Menu Saturday March 6, 2010, 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM $75/ person Learn how to cook a stylish menu perfect for entertaining in late winter/early spring. We’ll learn good timing of preparation & cooking, with emphasis on all that can be made ahead to minimize actual time in the kitchen during your party. We’ll also discuss variations so you can customize the dishes. On the menu: Savory Citrus & Fennel Salad, Herb Spiked & Stuffed Pork Roast, Braised Root Vegetables, Flourless Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce & Homemade Vanilla Ice-Cream. Printed recipes provided as well as time to sit down and enjoy the freshly prepared dishes.
Gardening Workshop: Building & Using Cold Frames Wednesday March 17, evening - Meeting, including social 6:30 PM; Presentation on cold frame starts around 8:00 PM Free Sponsored by the Rappahannock County Garden Club and held at the Washington Fire Hall (10 Firehouse Lane, Washington, VA). Learn how to build and use a collapsible cold frame to extend your growing season and pamper your tender seedlings.
Cookery Workshop: Provence in Rappahannock. Saturday March 20, 2009, 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM. $75/ person Learn to prepare a festive Provencal style Sunday lunch (a meal suitable for dinner and for company too, of course!) using ingredients readily available in our area in late winter: Cream of Vegetable Soup; Rack of Lamb with Tapenade; a Provencal Vegetable Gratin; Winter Mesclun Salad; Fresh Lemon Sorbet. Then sit-down to enjoy a taste of the just-prepared dishes. Printed recipes provided.
Gardening Workshop: Start Your Own Vegetable & Fruit Transplants from Seeds. Part I 2 separate sessions (chose one): Saturday February 27, 2010, 2:00 to 4:30 PM Monday March 8, 2010, 2:00 to 4:30 PM $45 person / $65 for 2 people sharing tray. Learn when and how to start specific seeds indoor in flats and pots for later transplanting and which ones are better direct-seeded. We will review sowing calendar for various plants (vegetable, fruit, herbs and even some edible flowers), appropriate soil(s) to use, germination conditions, light requirement, care after seedlings emerge, how to harden seedlings off, good transplanting techniques, fertilization practices, pest and disease control. Participant will choose seeds from the instructors' collection to start up a flat. They will take their flat home to tend and transplant at the appropriate time. Handouts will be distributed. All supplies (flats, pots, seeds, soil) provided. Bring your own apron & gloves and leave with a fully seeded flat!
Gardening Workshop: Start Your Own Vegetable & Fruit Transplants from Seeds. Part II 2 separate sessions (choose one): Sunday March 21, 2010, 2:00 to 4:00 PM Monday March 29, 2010, 2:00 to 4:00 PM $35 person without starting a tray/ $45 starting a tray ($5 discount for those who have taken Part I: $30 without a new tray/or not bringing tray back; $40 with tray either new or to transplant ) This class may be taken by itself or as a practical follow-up to Part I. In this class, we will focus on transplanting seedlings and providing advice on continuing to grow them strong & healthy. We will review the needs of specific seedlings between now and planting out (feeding, lighting, watering, up-potting, hardening off) and we will review transplanting out schedule and techniques. Bring back the tray seeded in Part I class for feed-back and up-potting or try your hands with the instructor’s seedlings. OR if you have not taken Part I, you can still start a tray. Hands-on class, all supplies (flats, pots & soil) provided. Bring your own apron & gloves.
Gardening Workshop: Kitchen Garden Primer 2 separate sessions (chose one): Friday March 26, 2010, 2:00 to 5:30 PM Sunday March 28, 2:00 to 5:30 $45/ person A great class for beginners and great review for gardeners of intermediate skills: learn all the practical basics of plant selection, seed sowing, planting & transplanting, succession planting and interplanting and other sound kitchen garden practices. Hands-on class with hand-outs. The class will be held partially outside in the garden, dress appropriately. (note if you want a more in-depth class on seed starting, please take the seed-starting class)
