For Everything There Is A Season

This is the introduction to the current Seasonal Table, a column – with recipes -  that I write for Flavor Magazine. The recipes are appropriate for any autumnal meal, and certainly, together, would make a local Thanksgiving feast in many parts of the US.

Harvest Festivals have all but vanished, at least in our society. Thanksgiving Day is sometimes derisively nicknamed “Turkey Day”. For too many people the event means wolfing down a huge plate of indifferent food prepared hurriedly and harriedly. And then go do something else, away from the table, and away from others.

On Discontent

The August garden is again this year most unsatisfactory. An almost total absence of rain, high temperatures and high humidity make for a discontented gardener and a stressed garden. Read more

Give Tomatoes a Chance

On July 2, The Washington Post (business section) had yet another article on the latest salmonella scare. Is it tomato? Or is something else? The FDA still does not know. Not a great confidence builder in the FDA or our industrial food system now, is it? The article contained a photograph captioned “Tomatoes are inspected at West Coast Tomato in Palmetto, Fla., last month.” The article – and illustrating photo – may be found here. I had to look really close at that photo, as I first wondered, “why are they using a picture of apples in an article about tomatoes?” Sadly, they ARE tomatoes (if you look close you can see), but they are green and they look rock-hard. What’s the story here?
